Friendly rivalry and a vintage recipe ensure sweet show success
Haddington and Millrace residents love to cook, and nothing gets the excitement going like a little friendly rivalry between the two communities.
Earlier this year, the Tenterfield Show saw avid bakers from both communities don their aprons and get to work. And the results were fantastic! With Haddington winning a prize for their delicious jam drops and Millrace winning a prize for their chunky choc chip cookies in the over-70’s cooking section, we couldn’t be prouder.
Kasey, Lifestyle Team Leader, says the show is an important annual event. “It’s so much more than an outing for the residents. There is much excitement in the build-up to the show. It’s a way to maintain connections with the community, reconnect with old friends and recreate traditions.”
And traditional it was. Millrace residents proudly used resident Heather’s prizewinning biscuit recipe – a tried and tested recipe that is over 100 years old and has been handed down through the family, winning many awards at previous shows.
Tenterfield residents excelled in other areas too, with excellent results in the gardening, needlework and crochet categories.
“We encourage the residents to maintain their interests and it’s wonderful to see them focussed on their various hobbies and how much pride they take in their creations,” Kasey says.
