Friendships flourish in our garden

Nothing beats a stroll around the garden in the sunshine to stimulate the senses, boost wellbeing and keep spirits up.

For a close-knit group of Haddington residents, our regular walks are particularly enjoyable, providing a special opportunity to catch up in the outdoors and continue the friendship they value so deeply.

Accompanied by the sound of birdsong, friends Sylvia and Susan love exploring the garden together,  cheerfully chatting about the different blooms and reminiscing about happy times in their own gardens. During a recent walk, they even picked a selection of flowers to brighten Sylvia’s table in the dining room.

Sometimes one of the residents shares their knowledge on the various plant species, while others delight in touching and smelling the different varieties. Conversations often turn to old-school recipes made from home-grown produce or other tips gathered over decades of gardening experience.

The walkers recently also discussed ideas for enhancing the garden, suggesting colourful new plants and fragrant herbs like rosemary, which could be used for Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day commemorations, and lavender, which would make a lovely base for pot pourri bags.

Lifestyle Lead, Stephanie, and Spiritual Officer, Kim, enjoy accompanying the residents on their walks saying they provide so much more than just fresh air and exercise. “Getting outdoors creates an opportunity for the residents to connect with one another in meaningful ways. It’s lovely seeing them thriving in familiar surroundings and contributing ideas for their home,” says Stephanie.
