Meet a vital, and much loved, member of our family
At the heart of our Tenterfield community are some incredible volunteers who dedicate their time, energy and compassion to enhancing the lives of residents.
Pat (pictured on the right), who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, is like family to us. She has been volunteering around Tenterfield for about 50 years and bringing her own special joy and artistic energy to Millrace and Haddington since they opened. Pat plays the piano beautifully and regularly performs nostalgic singalongs.
Why do you love volunteering at Tenterfield Care?
I get enormous satisfaction from playing the piano and knowing the residents always look forward to the music. Afterwards, I love talking to residents and family members, recalling old times when they may have danced to the songs I’ve just played.
What do you enjoy most about being with the residents?
Their company! I love catching up with old friends who now live at Millrace and Haddington, some of whom I have known for over 70 years! It’s also great to get to know new residents who are just settling in and perhaps might be feeling a little bit apprehensive. I like spending time with them and helping them feel more connected and at home.
How old were you when you first learned to play the piano?
I was eight when I started piano lessons and I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I performed for the first time here in Tenterfield when I was 18 at the School of the Arts; and for the last time in public at the same venue in 2016, aged 81.
